Apigat 5 mg contains Apixaban, an oral anticoagulant belonging to the class of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs). It is used to prevent and treat harmful blood clots in various medical conditions such as atrial fibrillation, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and pulmonary embolism (PE).
Unlike older anticoagulants like warfarin, Apixaban offers predictable anticoagulation without the need for routine blood monitoring, and it has fewer food and drug interactions, making it a patient-friendly option.
Mechanism of Action
Apixaban is a selective and reversible direct inhibitor of Factor Xa, a critical enzyme in the coagulation cascade.
How it works:
-
Factor Xa is responsible for converting prothrombin to thrombin.
-
Thrombin then converts fibrinogen to fibrin, forming blood clots.
-
By blocking Factor Xa, Apixaban prevents thrombin generation, thus reducing clot formation.
Uses / Indications
Apigat 5 mg is prescribed for both prevention and treatment of blood clots:
Approved uses include:
-
Stroke and systemic embolism prevention in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AF)
-
Treatment of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
-
Treatment of Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
-
Prevention of recurrent DVT or PE after initial therapy
-
Post-surgical thromboprophylaxis after hip or knee replacement surgery
Adverse Effects
While Apigat is generally well tolerated, as with all anticoagulants, its main risk is bleeding.
Common Side Effects:
-
Minor bleeding (gums, nosebleeds)
-
Bruising
-
Nausea
Serious (but less common):
-
Gastrointestinal bleeding
-
Intracranial hemorrhage
-
