Fosup Kit contains aprepitant in two strength formulations, 125 mg and 80 mg, designed to be taken over a three-day course as part of a regimen to prevent nausea and vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy. This medication is particularly useful in managing symptoms caused by highly and moderately emetogenic chemotherapy.
Aprepitant is an oral antiemetic that belongs to the neurokinin one receptor antagonist class. It is typically prescribed alongside a corticosteroid and a serotonin receptor antagonist to provide more complete control over chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting.
Mechanism of Action
Aprepitant works by blocking the action of a natural substance in the brain called substance P. Substance P binds to neurokinin one receptors, which are involved in triggering the vomiting reflex. By inhibiting this binding, aprepitant reduces the likelihood of both acute and delayed phases of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting.
This mechanism makes it especially effective when standard antiemetics alone do not provide full relief.
Therapeutic Uses
Fosup Kit is used in adult and adolescent patients for the following:
-
Prevention of acute and delayed nausea and vomiting associated with initial and repeat courses of highly emetogenic cancer chemotherapy
-
Prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with moderately emetogenic chemotherapy, often in combination with other antiemetics
The typical regimen includes one 125 mg capsule taken on day one, followed by one 80 mg capsule on days two and three. It is usually given as part of a three-drug combination therapy.
Adverse Effects
While Fosup Kit is generally well tolerated, like all medications it may cause side effects. These are usually mild to moderate in intensity.
Common side effects include:
-
Tiredness or weakness
-
Hiccups
