Imatib 400 mg contains imatinib, a targeted oral cancer therapy that has revolutionised the treatment of certain blood and gastrointestinal cancers. It is primarily used in conditions where abnormal cells multiply due to specific genetic mutations. Imatinib is known for its precision in targeting cancer-causing proteins while sparing healthy cells, making it more tolerable than traditional chemotherapy. It is considered a first-line treatment in many cases of chronic myeloid leukemia and gastrointestinal stromal tumors.
Mechanism of Action
Imatinib works by blocking specific tyrosine kinases, which are enzymes responsible for the growth and survival of cancer cells. In particular, it targets the BCR-ABL fusion protein that is present in most cases of chronic myeloid leukemia. By inhibiting this abnormal protein, imatinib prevents the uncontrolled growth of white blood cells. It also targets other kinases like c-KIT and PDGFR, which are implicated in gastrointestinal stromal tumors and certain other cancers.
