Celofos 2000 is a combination chemotherapy treatment that includes ifosfamide, an alkylating agent used to kill cancer cells, and mesna, a protective agent that helps reduce the risk of harmful effects on the bladder caused by ifosfamide. This combination is typically administered intravenously under the supervision of experienced healthcare professionals in a hospital or oncology setting. Celofos is an important option in the treatment of certain aggressive or advanced-stage cancers.
Mechanism of Action
-
Ifosfamide works by interfering with the DNA of rapidly dividing cancer cells. It introduces chemical bonds in the DNA strands, preventing them from copying properly. This halts cell replication and leads to cell death, particularly in fast-growing cancer cells.
-
Mesna (mercaptoethane sulfonate sodium) does not treat cancer itself but plays a crucial role in protecting the bladder lining. It binds with toxic byproducts of ifosfamide in the urine and neutralises them, thereby reducing the risk of hemorrhagic cystitis, a serious bladder-related side effect.
