It belongs to a class of drugs called thrombopoietin receptor agonists. These medications help the body produce more platelets, which are essential for blood clotting. Trombonat is commonly used in patients with chronic immune thrombocytopenia and other platelet-deficient conditions when standard treatments have not been effective.

Mechanism of Action

Eltrombopag works by stimulating the thrombopoietin receptor (also known as the TPO receptor) found on precursor cells in the bone marrow. By activating this receptor, eltrombopag promotes the production and maturation of megakaryocytes, the cells responsible for producing platelets.

The result is an increase in platelet counts, which helps reduce the risk of bleeding in individuals who have dangerously low platelet levels due to immune system attacks or bone marrow disorders.

Uses

Trombonat is prescribed for:

• Chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) in adults and children who have had an inadequate response to corticosteroids, immunoglobulins, or splenectomy

• Thrombocytopenia in patients with chronic hepatitis C to allow the initiation and maintenance of interferon-based therapy

• Severe aplastic anemia, either in combination with other agents or when other treatments fail
