Desirox 500 mg

Desirox 500 mg

Desirox 500 mg contains deferasirox, an oral iron-chelating agent designed to manage chronic iron overload in patients who receive frequent blood transfusions. Excess iron from repeated transfusions can accumulate in the liver, heart, and other organs, leading to serious complications if left untreated.

Desirox helps maintain iron balance by binding to the excess iron and allowing it to be excreted from the body, usually through the stool. It is commonly prescribed in long-term management of patients with thalassemia, sickle cell anemia, and certain other blood disorders.

Mechanism of Action

Deferasirox works by selectively binding to iron in the body, particularly the form called ferric iron, which tends to accumulate after repeated transfusions. Each molecule of deferasirox can bind tightly to iron and form a stable complex that is then eliminated primarily through feces.

By reducing the body’s total iron burden, Desirox helps protect vital organs from iron-related damage and supports long-term organ health, especially of the liver and heart.

Uses

Desirox is used to treat:

  • Chronic iron overload due to blood transfusions in both adults and children aged two years and older

  • Non-transfusion-dependent thalassemia syndromes where iron overload can occur despite the absence of regular transfusions

    Adverse Effects

Desirox is generally well tolerated but may cause side effects that need monitoring. Dose adjustments and regular follow-up tests help reduce risks.

    Common Side Effects
