Dasanat contains dasatinib, a potent oral medication used in the treatment of certain blood cancers. It is most commonly prescribed for chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph-positive ALL). Dasatinib belongs to a class of targeted therapies known as tyrosine kinase inhibitors, which help stop the growth and multiplication of cancer cells.
Approved for use in both adults and children, dasatinib offers a critical option when other treatments are not effective or when resistance develops.
Dasatinib works by inhibiting BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase, an abnormal enzyme produced by cancer cells in certain types of leukemia. This enzyme is the result of a genetic mutation called the Philadelphia chromosome, which drives uncontrolled cell growth in leukemia.
In addition to BCR-ABL, dasatinib also inhibits other kinases such as:
-
SRC-family kinases
-
c-KIT
-
PDGFR
