Bryxta contains bevacizumab, a monoclonal antibody designed to treat various types of cancers by inhibiting the growth of blood vessels that supply tumors. It is most commonly used in the treatment of colorectal, lung, kidney, cervical, and ovarian cancers, as well as glioblastoma. Bevacizumab represents a shift in cancer therapy by focusing not on directly killing cancer cells, but by starving them of nutrients and oxygen through the suppression of blood vessel development.

Mechanism of Action
Bevacizumab works by targeting and neutralising a protein in the body called vascular endothelial growth factor or VEGF. This protein plays a major role in forming new blood vessels, a process known as angiogenesis. In cancer, VEGF is often overproduced, leading to the creation of abnormal blood vessels that help tumors grow and spread. By blocking VEGF, Bryxta reduces the blood supply to the tumor, thereby slowing its growth and potentially shrinking it. This approach does not kill cancer cells directly but limits their ability to thrive.

Uses
Bryxta is approved and widely used for several types of cancer, including:

• Metastatic colorectal cancer: Often used in combination with chemotherapy as a first-line or second-line treatment

• Non-small cell lung cancer: Used with other chemotherapy agents in advanced stages

• Cervical cancer: Helps control advanced or persistent cases when combined with other treatments

• Ovarian and fallopian tube cancers: Especially in recurrent or newly diagnosed stages

• Renal cell carcinoma: Used with interferon in advanced cases

• Glioblastoma: Applied in recurrent forms of brain cancer

Adverse Effects

While Bryxta is an important therapy, it can cause some side effects, many of which are related to its impact on blood vessels. Common side effects include high blood pressure, fatigue, nosebleeds, mouth sores, and slowed wound healing. In some patients, it may also cause protein to appear in the urine or lead to gastrointestinal discomfort. Serious but less frequent risks include blood clots, bleeding events, gastrointestinal perforation, and impaired wound healing after surgery. Regular monitoring is recommended during treatment, especially for blood pressure and kidney function.
