Mytera contains Abiraterone, a targeted oral medication used in the treatment of advanced prostate cancer. It belongs to a group of drugs known as androgen biosynthesis inhibitors. Prostate cancer cells often rely on male hormones, particularly testosterone, to grow and survive. Mytera helps by reducing the production of these hormones, thereby slowing down or stopping the progression of cancer. It is usually prescribed in combination with a steroid such as prednisone to help manage side effects and improve treatment outcomes.

Mechanism of Action
Abiraterone works by blocking an enzyme called CYP17, which is essential for the production of androgens not only in the testes but also in the adrenal glands and even within the tumour itself. By inhibiting this enzyme, Mytera significantly reduces the levels of testosterone and other male hormones in the body. With lower hormone levels, prostate cancer cells lose one of their main sources of fuel, leading to slower tumour growth or even shrinkage. This mechanism allows Mytera to be effective even in patients who have already undergone hormone therapy or surgical castration.

Uses
Mytera is primarily used in the treatment of:

• Metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer, which continues to grow despite low testosterone levels

• Metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer, often in combination with hormone therapy and a steroid

  Adverse Effects
  While many patients tolerate Mytera well, some side effects can occur. Common side effects include high blood pressure, low potassium levels, fluid retention, joint pain, and liver enzyme changes. Some people may also experience fatigue, hot flushes, and increased risk of infections.

  Because Mytera affects hormone levels, it can lead to hormonal imbalances in the body. The addition of prednisone helps reduce the risk of these imbalances and manages symptoms like swelling or high blood pressure. Liver function should be monitored regularly, and any symptoms like dark urine, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or severe nausea should be reported immediately.
