Acabrunat contains Acalabrutinib, an oral targeted therapy used in the treatment of certain blood cancers. It belongs to a class of medicines known as Bruton’s tyrosine kinase inhibitors. These medicines are designed to interfere with signals that allow cancerous B-cells to grow and survive. Acabrunat offers a more selective approach than earlier drugs in this category, which may help reduce some of the unwanted side effects. It is mainly used for chronic lymphocytic leukemia and mantle cell lymphoma.
Mechanism of Action
Acalabrutinib works by blocking an enzyme called Bruton’s tyrosine kinase. This enzyme plays a key role in how B-cells function. In some cancers, especially those affecting the blood and lymphatic system, B-cells become cancerous and grow uncontrollably. By inhibiting this enzyme, Acabrunat disrupts the survival signals that cancer cells depend on. This leads to slower growth or death of the abnormal cells, while sparing most healthy cells and reducing the chances of harming normal immune functions.
Uses
Acabrunat is used in the treatment of:
-
Chronic lymphocytic leukemia, including patients who are newly diagnosed or those whose disease has returned or not responded to prior treatment
-
Small lymphocytic lymphoma, which behaves similarly to chronic lymphocytic leukemia
-
Mantle cell lymphoma, usually in patients who have already received at least one prior therapy
Adverse Effects
While Acabrunat is generally well tolerated, some side effects can occur. Common ones include headache, fatigue, diarrhea, muscle pain, and bruising. Some patients may also experience infections, low blood counts, or nausea.Less commonly, more serious side effects may occur. These can include irregular heartbeat, bleeding problems, or severe infections. Patients with a history of heart disease or bleeding disorders should be closely monitored. There may also be a small risk of developing other cancers, such as skin cancer, so regular skin checks are advised.
It is important to stay in touch with the healthcare team and report any unusual symptoms, such as dizziness, fever, chest pain, or easy bruising.
