Geftib 20 mg

Geftib 20 mg

Geftib contains gefitinib, a targeted therapy used in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer. It belongs to a group of medicines called tyrosine kinase inhibitors and is especially effective in patients whose tumours have specific mutations in the EGFR gene. Geftib is usually prescribed as a first-line treatment for advanced or metastatic lung cancer.

Mechanism of Action
Gefitinib works by blocking the activity of the epidermal growth factor receptor, which plays a key role in the growth and survival of cancer cells. In patients with activating EGFR mutations, gefitinib binds to the receptor and stops the signal that tells the cancer cells to grow and divide. This leads to slower tumour progression and, in many cases, tumour shrinkage.

Uses
Geftib is mainly used in the treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer in adults, particularly in cases where the tumour carries an EGFR mutation. It may also be considered for continued treatment in patients who have previously responded to EGFR inhibitors.

Adverse Effects
Common side effects include skin rash, diarrhoea, dry skin, and weakness. Some patients may experience nausea, vomiting, or eye irritation. Liver enzyme changes and low appetite are also reported. Rare but serious side effects include lung inflammation and severe liver problems, which require immediate medical attention. Regular monitoring helps manage side effects and ensures treatment safety.
