Apigat 5 mg

Apigat 5 mg

APIGAT contains Apixaban, an oral anticoagulant medicine used to prevent and treat blood clots. It belongs to a newer class of blood thinners known as direct oral anticoagulants. APIGAT is often prescribed to lower the risk of stroke in patients with irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation), as well as to manage or prevent conditions like deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.

Mechanism of Action
Apixaban works by directly blocking an important clotting factor in the blood called Factor Xa. By inhibiting Factor Xa, Apixaban prevents the conversion of prothrombin to thrombin, a key step in the formation of clots. This action reduces the risk of harmful clots forming in blood vessels without affecting existing clots, and it does so in a predictable manner without the need for frequent monitoring.

Uses
APIGAT is used for:

  • Preventing stroke and systemic embolism in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation

  • Treating deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism

  • Preventing recurrence of DVT and PE after initial therapy

  • Preventing blood clots following hip or knee replacement surgery

    Adverse Effects
As a blood thinner, the main concern with Apixaban is bleeding. Some of the common and possible adverse effects include:

    • Increased tendency to bruise or bleed easily

    • Nosebleeds or bleeding gums

    • Gastrointestinal discomfort such as nausea or abdominal pain

    • Low red blood cell count (anemia), leading to fatigue or weakness
