Okamet is an oral antidiabetic medication that contains metformin hydrochloride as its active ingredient. It is commonly prescribed to manage type 2 diabetes mellitus, particularly in overweight or obese adults whose blood sugar levels are not adequately controlled through diet and exercise alone. Okamet helps improve glycaemic control and is considered a first-line therapy due to its safety profile, effectiveness, and additional benefits like weight neutrality or mild weight loss.
Mechanism of Action
Metformin works primarily by decreasing glucose production in the liver, a process known as hepatic gluconeogenesis. It also increases insulin sensitivity in muscle tissues, allowing cells to take up glucose more effectively. Additionally, it helps slow down the absorption of glucose from the intestines.
Unlike many other antidiabetic drugs, metformin does not stimulate the pancreas to produce more insulin. This means it carries a very low risk of causing low blood sugar, also known as hypoglycaemia, when used alone.
