Glimda is an oral antidiabetic medication that contains glimepiride as its active ingredient. It belongs to the sulfonylurea class of drugs and is used in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Glimda helps lower blood sugar levels in people whose diabetes is not adequately controlled through diet, exercise, and lifestyle modifications alone. It is often prescribed as monotherapy or in combination with other antidiabetic agents such as metformin or insulin.
Mechanism of Action
Glimepiride lowers blood glucose by stimulating the pancreas to release more insulin. It acts on specific receptors in pancreatic beta cells, triggering insulin secretion in a glucose-dependent manner. In addition to enhancing insulin output, glimepiride may also improve the sensitivity of peripheral tissues to insulin, supporting more effective glucose uptake by muscles and fat cells.
Unlike some other sulfonylureas, glimepiride has a longer duration of action and requires careful dose adjustment to reduce the risk of hypoglycaemia.
