Jardiance Met is a combination oral medication that contains two active ingredients: empagliflozin and metformin hydrochloride. It is used to manage type 2 diabetes in adults and helps in controlling blood sugar levels more effectively than either drug alone. This fixed-dose combination allows for convenient dosing and is usually prescribed when diet, exercise, and a single medication are not sufficient. Jardiance Met may also provide cardiovascular and renal benefits in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Mechanism of Action
This dual-action medication works through two different mechanisms:
-
Empagliflozin is an SGLT2 inhibitor. It works in the kidneys by blocking the sodium-glucose co-transporter 2, reducing glucose reabsorption and increasing its excretion through urine. This helps lower blood sugar levels and may also reduce blood pressure and body weight.
-
Metformin is a biguanide. It primarily works in the liver by decreasing glucose production. It also increases insulin sensitivity and enhances glucose uptake in muscles.
Uses
Jardiance Met is used to:-
Improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes, especially when single-agent therapy is not adequate
-
Help reduce the risk of cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes and established heart disease (due to the presence of empagliflozin)
-
Support weight reduction and modest blood pressure lowering in some patients
