Forxiga is an oral medication that contains dapagliflozin, which belongs to a class of drugs known as SGLT2 inhibitors. It is primarily used to manage blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. Beyond glucose control, Forxiga has gained importance for its benefits in heart failure and chronic kidney disease, making it a valuable option for patients with or without diabetes.
Mechanism of Action
Dapagliflozin works by inhibiting the sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) in the kidneys. This transporter is responsible for reabsorbing most of the glucose from the urine back into the blood. By blocking this action, dapagliflozin increases the excretion of glucose through urine, which lowers blood sugar levels.
This process is independent of insulin, which makes it effective even in later stages of type 2 diabetes when insulin sensitivity is reduced. Additionally, it causes a mild diuretic effect, reducing blood pressure and contributing to weight loss.
