Emvarin 200 mg contains ribavirin, an antiviral medicine used to treat certain viral infections, most commonly chronic hepatitis C. It is usually not used alone but in combination with other medications like interferons or direct-acting antivirals to increase effectiveness. Ribavirin has been used in clinical practice for many years and plays a supportive but important role in the management of viral diseases, especially those affecting the liver.
Mechanism of Action
Ribavirin works by interfering with the ability of viruses to multiply. Once inside infected cells, it gets converted into its active form and disrupts viral RNA synthesis. This blocks the virus from copying its genetic material and assembling new virus particles. It also enhances the immune response against viruses and introduces mutations in viral RNA that weaken the virus. Although the exact mechanism is complex, the overall effect is a significant reduction in the viral load.
