Mechanism of Action
Ribavirin is a synthetic nucleoside analogue. It interferes with the replication of viral RNA by several mechanisms. It gets incorporated into viral genetic material and causes errors during viral replication. This leads to the production of faulty virus particles that cannot multiply effectively. Additionally, ribavirin enhances the immune response against the virus and depletes substances the virus needs to grow. The combined result is a reduced ability of the virus to survive and spread in the body.

Ribasure is primarily used in combination with interferon or direct-acting antiviral drugs for the treatment of:

  It may also be used in certain off-label settings for severe respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections in children or viral hemorrhagic fevers under strict medical supervision. Adverse Effects
  Ribasure can cause a range of side effects, especially when used long term.
  The most common and serious side effect is hemolytic anemia, which means a drop in red blood cell count due to damage to red blood cells. This can lead to fatigue, shortness of breath, and heart-related complications in severe cases.
  Other common side effects include headache, nausea, irritability, insomnia, and weight loss. When used with interferon, side effects may intensify and include mood changes or flu-like symptoms.
  Rare but serious side effects include liver dysfunction, breathing problems, skin rashes, and allergic reactions.
