Tenvir EM is a fixed-dose combination tablet containing tenofovir disoproxil fumarate and emtricitabine. Both are antiretroviral medications used in the management and prevention of HIV infection. This combination is widely used as part of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) and is also recommended for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in individuals at high risk of HIV. Tenvir EM helps reduce the amount of virus in the body and supports the immune system, improving long-term health outcomes and reducing the risk of HIV transmission.

Mechanism of Action
Both tenofovir and emtricitabine are nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). They work by blocking the action of the enzyme reverse transcriptase, which HIV needs to copy its genetic material and multiply inside the body. By mimicking natural building blocks of viral DNA, these drugs cause premature chain termination during viral replication. This stops the virus from multiplying and helps lower the overall viral load. When used consistently, especially in prevention, this action helps prevent the establishment of infection after exposure.

Uses

  Tenvir EM is generally well tolerated, but like all medications, it may cause side effects in some individuals.
  Common side effects include headache, nausea, diarrhea, tiredness, and dizziness. Some people may also experience mild skin darkening, especially on the palms and soles.
  More serious but less common effects include kidney problems, decreased bone mineral density, and liver issues. Regular monitoring of kidney function is recommended during treatment.
