Bonmax contains Teriparatide, a synthetic form of a natural human hormone known as parathyroid hormone (PTH 1-34). It is used to treat osteoporosis in individuals who are at high risk of bone fractures, especially postmenopausal women and men with low bone density, or those who have not responded well to other osteoporosis treatments.
Mechanism of Action:
Unlike most osteoporosis medications that slow down bone breakdown, Teriparatide stimulates new bone formation:
-
It mimics the action of natural PTH in the body, but when given in small daily doses, it encourages bone-building cells called osteoblasts to increase bone formation.
-
Over time, this helps improve bone strength and bone mineral density, particularly in the spine and hips.
-
It also improves the structure of bone, making it less fragile and reducing the risk of fractures.
Uses:
Bonmax is prescribed for:-
Treatment of severe osteoporosis in postmenopausal women
-
Osteoporosis in men who are at high risk of fracture
-
Glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis, which can occur in patients on long-term steroid therapy
-
Patients who have had multiple fractures or have failed other treatments
Adverse Effects:
While Bonmax is generally well tolerated, some individuals may experience:-
Mild dizziness or lightheadedness, especially after the first few doses
-
Pain at the injection site, such as redness or swelling
-
Leg cramps or muscle pain
-
Nausea
-
Rarely, there can be an increase in calcium levels in the blood or urine
-
Though extremely rare, there is a theoretical risk of osteosarcoma (a type of bone cancer), so its use is limited to 2 years in a lifetime
