Cresemba 100 mg contains isavuconazole, a broad-spectrum antifungal medication used to treat serious and potentially life-threatening fungal infections. It is particularly useful in immunocompromised patients, such as those undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplantation, or with advanced HIV infection. Isavuconazole belongs to the triazole class of antifungals and is available both as oral capsules and as an intravenous formulation.
Mechanism of Action:
Isavuconazole works by interfering with the synthesis of ergosterol, a critical component of fungal cell membranes:
-
It inhibits the enzyme lanosterol 14-alpha-demethylase, which is essential for ergosterol production.
-
Without ergosterol, the fungal cell membrane becomes unstable and permeable, leading to cell death.
-
This action effectively stops the growth and spread of the fungal infection.
Uses:
Cresemba is mainly indicated for:-
Invasive aspergillosis, a severe infection often seen in cancer or transplant patients
-
Invasive mucormycosis, a rare but aggressive fungal infection of the sinuses, brain, or lungs
-
May also be used in certain off-label settings for resistant Candida infections or other difficult-to-treat mycoses, as per specialist advice
