Elaxim 40 mg

Elaxim 40 mg

Elaxim contains Tenecteplase, a genetically engineered variant of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA). It is used to dissolve blood clots in patients experiencing a heart attack, specifically ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Elaxim is given as a single intravenous injection, usually in emergency settings to restore blood flow as quickly as possible.

Mechanism of Action:

Tenecteplase works by activating plasminogen, a natural substance in the blood, to form plasmin. Plasmin is an enzyme that breaks down fibrin, the main structural component of blood clots. By breaking down the clot, it restores blood flow to the heart muscle and reduces damage during a heart attack.

Tenecteplase is designed to be more specific to fibrin and has a longer half-life than alteplase, allowing it to be given as a single bolus dose.

Uses:

Elaxim is used primarily for:

  • Acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) in adults

  • It is most effective when given as early as possible after the onset of chest pain or symptoms of a heart attack

  • Used when primary angioplasty is not immediately available

    Adverse Effects:

    Common side effects:

    • Bleeding, especially at injection or catheter sites

    • Nausea or vomiting

    • Low blood pressure

    • Fever or mild allergic reactions
