Indirab is a purified, inactivated rabies vaccine used for active immunisation against rabies infection. It is produced using the Vero cell line and is given to both prevent and treat rabies after potential exposure. Rabies is a fatal viral disease, and timely vaccination with Indirab can be life-saving.
Mechanism of Action:
Indirab works by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies against the rabies virus. Since it contains inactivated (killed) virus, it cannot cause the disease but helps the body prepare a defense in case of real exposure.
When administered either before exposure (pre-exposure prophylaxis) or after a bite or scratch from a potentially infected animal (post-exposure prophylaxis), it helps prevent the onset of rabies, which is otherwise almost always fatal once symptoms appear.
Uses:
1. Pre-exposure prophylaxis:
-
For individuals at high risk such as veterinarians, animal handlers, lab workers, or travelers to high-risk areas
2. Post-exposure prophylaxis:
-
Given to individuals after a suspected or confirmed exposure to rabies through dog, cat, or wild animal bites or scratches
-
Used in combination with rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) for category III exposures
Adverse Effects:
Common side effects:
-
Pain, swelling, or redness at the injection site
-
Mild fever
-
Headache or fatigue
-
Muscle aches
