Orofer FCM is an intravenous iron preparation containing ferric carboxymaltose. It is used to treat iron deficiency anaemia, especially in adults who cannot tolerate oral iron or need a rapid increase in iron levels. The formulation allows for the administration of a high dose of iron in a single sitting, making it convenient for both patients and healthcare providers.
Mechanism of Action:
Once injected into the bloodstream, ferric carboxymaltose breaks down gradually to release iron. This iron is then taken up by the body and used to make haemoglobin, the molecule in red blood cells that carries oxygen. The carboxymaltose complex helps deliver iron in a controlled manner, reducing the risk of sudden spikes or free iron that can cause damage.
Uses:
-
Treatment of iron deficiency anaemia in adults with chronic kidney disease, inflammatory bowel disease, or heavy menstrual bleeding
-
Used when oral iron therapy is ineffective or not well tolerated
-
Often preferred when a quick improvement in iron levels or haemoglobin is required
Adverse Effects:
Common side effects:
-
Nausea
-
Headache
-
Dizziness
-
Injection site reactions like pain, swelling, or redness
-
Metallic taste in the mouth
