Phosome 50 contains Liposomal Amphotericin B, a modified formulation of the antifungal drug Amphotericin B. It is specially designed in liposomal form to reduce toxicity and improve delivery of the drug to infected tissues. This injection is used to treat serious and life-threatening fungal infections, particularly in hospitalised or immunocompromised patients.
Mechanism of Action:
Amphotericin B works by binding to a substance called ergosterol in the cell membranes of fungi. This disrupts the fungal cell membrane, creating holes and causing the contents to leak out, which leads to the death of the fungal cell. The liposomal formulation helps target infected tissues more precisely while reducing harmful effects on healthy organs, especially the kidneys.
Uses:
-
Treatment of systemic fungal infections such as candidiasis, aspergillosis, and cryptococcosis
-
Treatment of visceral leishmaniasis (kala-azar)
-
Often used in immunocompromised patients such as those with HIV, cancer, or organ transplants
-
Suitable for patients who cannot tolerate conventional Amphotericin B due to kidney toxicity
Adverse Effects:
Common side effects:
-
Fever and chills during infusion
-
Headache
-
Nausea or vomiting
-
Back or muscle pain
