Plasbumin

Plasbumin

Plasbumin is a sterile, purified solution of human serum albumin prepared from pooled human plasma. It is used as a plasma volume expander and is essential in managing various medical conditions involving fluid and protein loss. Plasbumin helps maintain blood pressure and fluid balance during critical illnesses or surgical procedures.

Mechanism of Action:

Plasbumin contains albumin, a major plasma protein that maintains oncotic pressure in the blood vessels. By drawing water into the circulatory system, it increases blood volume and supports blood pressure. It also helps transport hormones, enzymes, and drugs by binding to them in the bloodstream.

Uses:

Plasbumin is typically used in the following conditions:

  • Shock due to blood loss or severe infection

  • Burns with significant fluid loss

  • Hypoalbuminemia, especially in liver disease, nephrotic syndrome, or malnutrition

  • During cardiopulmonary bypass procedures

  • Plasma exchange therapies in autoimmune disorders

  • Hemodialysis or liver failure management when albumin replacement is required

    Adverse Effects:

    Mild effects may include:

    • Flushing or warmth

    • Headache

    • Nausea

    • Mild fever or chills
