Nycron

Nycron

Nycron is a fixed-dose combination medication that contains netupitant and palonosetron. It is used primarily to prevent nausea and vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy. These symptoms are common and distressing side effects of many chemotherapy drugs. Nycron combines two powerful agents that target different pathways involved in the vomiting reflex, offering extended protection against both immediate and delayed symptoms.

Mechanism of Action

Nycron works through a dual mechanism:

  • Netupitant is a selective antagonist of neurokinin one receptors. These receptors are activated by a substance called substance P, which is involved in triggering delayed nausea and vomiting after chemotherapy. By blocking these receptors, netupitant helps prevent nausea that occurs several hours to days after treatment.

  • Palonosetron is a second-generation serotonin receptor antagonist. It works by blocking serotonin receptors in the brain and gut that are responsible for the early phase of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. It has a long half-life, allowing it to provide prolonged relief with a single dose.

    Uses

    Nycron is used for:

    • Prevention of acute and delayed nausea and vomiting in adults receiving highly or moderately emetogenic chemotherapy

    • Providing long-lasting protection with a single oral dose given before chemotherapy

It is not used for treating existing nausea or vomiting, but rather to prevent these symptoms from occurring in the first place.

    Adverse Effects

Nycron is generally well tolerated, but some individuals may experience side effects such as:

    • Headache or dizziness

    • Constipation, which is relatively common

    • Fatigue or tiredness after taking the medication

    • Mild indigestion or stomach discomfort

    • Rarely, allergic reactions such as rash or swelling
