ATAXIN 50 mg

ATAXIN 50 mg

ATAXIN contains enrofloxacin, a broad-spectrum antibiotic from the fluoroquinolone class. It is commonly used in dogs to treat a wide range of bacterial infections affecting the skin, urinary tract, respiratory system, and digestive system. Enrofloxacin is valued for its strong antibacterial properties and ability to reach deep into tissues, making it suitable for both acute and chronic infections.

Mechanism of Action:
Enrofloxacin works by inhibiting bacterial enzymes called DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. These enzymes are essential for bacterial DNA replication and repair. When enrofloxacin blocks these enzymes, it disrupts the bacterial cell’s ability to multiply and survive, leading to the elimination of the infection.

Uses:
ATAXIN is prescribed in dogs for the treatment of:

  • Skin and wound infections

  • Respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia

  • Urinary tract infections

  • Gastrointestinal infections caused by susceptible bacteria

  • Deep tissue and bone infections in certain cases
It is also used when other antibiotics are ineffective due to resistance or when rapid action is needed.

    Adverse Effects:
Although generally well tolerated, some dogs may show side effects while on enrofloxacin, including:

    • Vomiting, nausea, or diarrhea

    • Loss of appetite

    • Lethargy or weakness

    • Rarely, changes in behavior such as restlessness or nervousness

    • Joint or tendon issues, especially in growing puppies

    • In very rare cases, vision problems due to retinal damage (mostly in cats, but caution is advised)
