BDCYCLO contains cyclophosphamide, a chemotherapy medicine widely used in the treatment of various cancers and some autoimmune diseases. It belongs to a class of drugs called alkylating agents. Cyclophosphamide has been in clinical use for decades and is known for its broad-spectrum activity against rapidly dividing cells.
Mechanism of Action
Cyclophosphamide works by interfering with the DNA of cells. After it enters the body, it is converted in the liver into active compounds that attach to the DNA in cancer cells. This leads to cross-linking of DNA strands, preventing the cells from dividing and ultimately causing their death. Because cancer cells divide more rapidly than most normal cells, they are more affected by this process.
Uses
BDCYCLO is used to treat a variety of cancers, including lymphomas, leukemias, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and multiple myeloma. It is also used as an immunosuppressive agent in non-cancerous conditions such as lupus and certain types of kidney disease, especially when other treatments have not worked. The drug may be given alone or in combination with other chemotherapy agents depending on the disease and treatment protocol.
Adverse Effects
Common side effects of cyclophosphamide include nausea, vomiting, hair loss, decreased white blood cell count, and fatigue. Because it affects the immune system, patients are at increased risk for infections. Long-term or high-dose use may increase the risk of bladder irritation or bleeding, and rarely, it may contribute to secondary cancers. Hydration and other protective measures are often recommended to reduce risks to the bladder.
