BDNab contains paclitaxel (albumin-bound), a chemotherapy medicine used in the treatment of various types of cancer. Unlike traditional paclitaxel, this formulation is bound to albumin, a natural protein in the body, which allows for better delivery of the drug into tumor tissues and eliminates the need for solvents that may cause allergic reactions.
BDNab is used intravenously under the supervision of a qualified oncologist. It plays a significant role in the treatment of breast cancer, lung cancer, and pancreatic cancer, especially in cases where the disease has spread or is resistant to other treatments.
Mechanism of Action
Paclitaxel works by interfering with the normal function of microtubules, which are essential components of the cell’s structure and division machinery. It stabilizes these microtubules and prevents them from breaking down, which is a necessary step for a cell to divide and multiply.
By locking the cells in the middle of division, paclitaxel leads to cell cycle arrest and eventually cell death, particularly targeting rapidly dividing cancer cells. The albumin-bound formulation in BDNab enhances the transport of paclitaxel into tumors via a process known as albumin receptor-mediated endocytosis, making the treatment more effective and often better tolerated.
Uses
BDNab is indicated for the treatment of:
-
Metastatic breast cancer, especially after failure of first-line chemotherapy
-
Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), in combination with other agents like carboplatin
-
Pancreatic cancer, typically combined with gemcitabine in advanced stages
-
Other solid tumors, based on the oncologist’s discretion and treatment protocols
Adverse Effects
BDNab is a potent therapy, and while it offers significant clinical benefits, it may also be associated with certain side effects.
Common Side Effects
-
Hair loss (usually temporary)
-
Fatigue or weakness
-
Nausea and vomiting
-
Loss of appetite and weight loss
-
