Cresp 40 mcg

Cresp 40 mcg

Cresp 40 mcg contains Darbepoetin alfa, a man-made form of a protein that helps the body produce red blood cells. It is a long-acting version of erythropoietin and is used to treat anemia caused by chronic kidney disease or cancer treatment. It reduces the need for blood transfusions in such patients by helping the body make more red blood cells naturally.

Mechanism of Action:

Darbepoetin alfa works by stimulating the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells. It binds to the erythropoietin receptor on red cell precursors and enhances their growth and survival. This helps increase the hemoglobin levels and corrects anemia over time. Because of chemical modifications, it lasts longer in the body than natural erythropoietin, allowing less frequent dosing.

Uses:

  • Anemia in patients with chronic kidney disease, whether on dialysis or not

  • Anemia in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, especially when chemotherapy is expected to continue for two months or longer

  • Helps reduce the need for red blood cell transfusions

    Adverse Effects:

    Common side effects:

    • High blood pressure

    • Headache

    • Fatigue

    • Swelling of hands, feet, or ankles

    • Injection site pain or redness
