HepaRel 100 IU is an injectable preparation that contains Heparin Sodium, an anticoagulant or blood thinner. It is commonly used in hospitals to prevent and treat blood clots in veins, arteries, or the lungs. By reducing the blood’s ability to clot, Heparin plays a critical role in managing conditions such as deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and during certain surgeries or dialysis procedures. The 100 IU concentration is typically used in low doses for flushing intravenous lines to prevent clot formation.
Mechanism of Action:
Heparin works by enhancing the activity of a natural protein in the body called antithrombin.
-
Antithrombin inactivates clotting factors, particularly thrombin and factor Xa, which are crucial for blood clot formation.
-
By boosting antithrombin activity, Heparin slows down the clotting process and prevents existing clots from growing.
-
It does not dissolve clots directly but allows the body to break them down over time.
Uses:
HepaRel 100 IU is primarily used for:-
Preventing blood clots in patients at risk, such as those undergoing surgery, those on bed rest, or with certain heart conditions
-
Flushing intravenous (IV) catheters to keep them open and prevent clot formation inside the lines
-
Supporting anticoagulation during procedures like dialysis or cardiac surgery
-
In higher doses (when appropriate formulations are used), it is used for treating deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism, or unstable angina
Adverse Effects:
Although effective, Heparin may lead to some side effects, especially with prolonged or high-dose use:-
Bleeding, ranging from minor bruising to more serious internal bleeding, especially if not monitored
-
Low platelet count (heparin-induced thrombocytopenia or HIT), a rare but serious condition that paradoxically increases clotting risk
-
Redness, irritation, or pain at the injection site
-
Osteoporosis or bone thinning with long-term use
-
Elevated liver enzymes in some cases
-
Rarely, allergic reactions like rash or difficulty breathing
