Lonoparin contains Enoxaparin Sodium, which is a low molecular weight heparin used as an anticoagulant. It helps in preventing and treating blood clots in various medical conditions. It is commonly prescribed in hospitals to reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, especially in patients undergoing surgery or those who are immobile.
Mechanism of Action:
Enoxaparin works by inhibiting clotting factors, particularly Factor Xa and to a lesser extent Factor IIa (thrombin). It does not dissolve existing clots but helps prevent new ones from forming or existing clots from growing larger. It has a predictable anticoagulant effect, which allows for fixed dosing without routine blood monitoring in most cases.
Uses:
Lonoparin is used for:
-
Prevention of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) after orthopedic or abdominal surgery
-
Treatment of existing DVT or pulmonary embolism
-
Prevention of clotting in patients with acute illness who are at high risk for thrombosis
-
Used in heart attack cases, including unstable angina and non-ST elevation myocardial infarction
-
During dialysis, to prevent clotting in the extracorporeal circuit
Adverse Effects:
Common side effects:
-
Bleeding or bruising at the injection site
-
Mild swelling or redness where the injection was given
-
Low platelet count (mild and reversible)
