Nu PTH Injection

Nu PTH Injection

Nu PTH Injection contains recombinant human parathyroid hormone 1-34, also known as teriparatide. It is used in the management of osteoporosis, especially in individuals at high risk of fractures. This synthetic version of a natural hormone plays a vital role in bone metabolism. Nu PTH is usually prescribed when other treatments have failed or are not well tolerated. It is given as a subcutaneous injection once daily.

Mechanism of Action:
Parathyroid hormone (PTH) helps regulate calcium and phosphate balance in the body and is involved in bone remodeling.

  • Nu PTH stimulates bone-forming cells called osteoblasts, which leads to new bone formation.

  • It increases calcium absorption from the intestines and reduces its excretion by the kidneys, maintaining healthy calcium levels.

  • Unlike other osteoporosis drugs that slow bone breakdown, Nu PTH actively builds bone mass and improves bone strength.

    Uses:
Nu PTH Injection is mainly used for:

    • Treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and in men who are at high risk of bone fractures

    • Osteoporosis due to long-term corticosteroid use

    • In select cases, hypoparathyroidism when endogenous PTH is low and standard treatments do not suffice

      Adverse Effects:
Nu PTH is generally well tolerated, but some individuals may experience side effects such as:

      • Mild nausea, dizziness, or headache shortly after injection

      • Leg cramps or joint pain may occur with ongoing use

      • Increased blood calcium levels, which can cause fatigue, confusion, or constipation if not monitored

      • Injection site reactions like redness, swelling, or discomfort

      • In very rare cases, prolonged use has been associated with an increased risk of osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer, based on animal studies. This is why treatment duration is strictly controlled.
