Panacur 150 mg

Panacur 150 mg

Panacur is the brand name for fenbendazole, a broad-spectrum anthelmintic medication primarily used in veterinary medicine. It is commonly prescribed to eliminate gastrointestinal parasites in animals such as dogs, cats, horses, cattle, and even exotic pets. While traditionally used in animals, there has been increasing public interest in its potential off-label use in humans, although this remains a subject of ongoing research and regulatory caution.

Mechanism of Action

Fenbendazole works by disrupting the energy metabolism of parasitic worms. Specifically, it binds to the parasite’s tubulin, a structural protein that forms microtubules. This binding prevents the formation of microtubules necessary for glucose uptake and other essential cellular processes. As a result, the parasite is deprived of energy, becomes immobile, and eventually dies. Importantly, fenbendazole targets parasitic cells while generally sparing host cells, which contributes to its favorable safety profile in animals.

Uses

Panacur is widely used in veterinary settings for the treatment and control of a variety of parasitic infections including:

  • Roundworms (ascarids)

  • Hookworms

  • Whipworms

  • Tapeworms (limited effectiveness)

  • Giardia infections

  • Lungworms in some animal species

    Adverse Effects

Fenbendazole is generally well tolerated in animals, but some side effects may occur, especially if high doses are used or if the animal has a heavy parasite burden. Reported adverse effects include:

    • Mild gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting or diarrhea

    • Lethargy in some animals during treatment

    • Allergic reactions, though rare

    • Inflammatory responses due to dying parasites, especially in severe infections
